Essex at the British 2010

No fewer than 21 Essex players took part in the British Championships Congress at Canterbury, 25 July - 7 Aug 2010, which we are sure must be a record. Some players entered more than one tournament. How they fared can be found in the list below (select "Essex Scores" from the navigation bar above).

We are indebted to the Bulletin Team on the British Championship 2010 Website for the collation and availability of all the games in the British Championship itself in pgn formast. From this we have extracted all the games by Essex players, which you can access from the navigation bar above ("All B.Ch Games") which will afford you the opportunity to play through the games on screen and/or download the pgn database. We are also indebted to John Philpott for his daily postings on our Blogsite as the Congress progressed and these blogs, giving daily results, news, etc., are also available from the navigation bar above (the link gives you a list of the daily positings - once you have accessed a page, links backwards and forwards will be found at the bottom of each blog page), along with the Picture Gallery (mostly John's pics, but some by the Webmaster taken on a one day visit).

One accolade bestowed upon an Essex player was the award of Game of the Championship to Richard Pert, for his Round 10 game against Thomas Rendle (Game 36 in the database). This game has also been annotated by Andrew Martin in the ECF Junior publication "Right Move" for September 2010, accessible HERE. See page 5. We were also impressed by Richard's Q-side attack in his game against Peter Constantinou in Round 8, Game 28.

We may add to this summary, so keep an eye out in the Update Blog on the Home page. - WM

In the evening of the middle Sunday, the East Saxons quiz team comprising David and Jane Smith, Ivor Smith, Colin Ramage and John Philpott (find them in the Picture Gallery) succeeded in repeating last year’s feat (when we had been joined by Ian Reynolds) of winning the Quiz. The final score of 74/120, 4 points clear of the runners up, may not seem particularly impressive, but there were some slightly obscure rounds on the Canterbury Tales and Cathedrals, and TWO rounds on patron saints where we, and I suspect all the other teams, scored badly.
