Diamond Jubilee event *
Held
Spring Bank Holiday 23-25 May 2009 at RedbridgeInstitute, Gaysham Avenue, Gants Hill, Ilford
* The first Congress was organised by Ilford Chess Club in May 1950 to celebrate the club's 50th anniversary. Taken over by the Essex Chess Association in 1951 our annual event has continued without a break ever since.

Rival event hits Ilford numbers
A new congress, at Amersham, Bucks, appeared on this same weekend, taking entries away from Ilford, which dropped to 110 entries from 140 last year. The Amersham congress closely mirrored Ilford in its format and was clearly near enough, geographically, to affect the entry, so its appearance can be deemed to be in breach of the unwritten rule that organisers shouldn't set up a rival event similar in type and location to an established event. As Ilford was celebrating its Diamond Jubilee, it about qualifies for "established"; although it was held away from the Ilford area for a number of years in the 1990s, it has been back in Ilford for 10 years now. But perhaps this unwritten rule is not known or heeded by modern-day organisers?
However.
Russian GM Alex Cherniaev returned to take the
Open
with 5/6, half a point ahead of
Andrew Lewis
and
Subin Sen
(both of Ilford CC), on 4½/6. The Essex pair could not be separated by tie-break (SPS), thereby meaning a play-off for the Essex Championship (see below). John Hodgson (Ilford) and David Haydon (Thurrock) featured in the next score group, 4/6.
The British Championship Qualifying place went to Subin Sen, who also won the
David Wood Memorial Trust
prize for the best performance by an Essex Junior.
In the
Major
Stephen Pride and Jimmy Jiang tied for first on 5/6.
Mustapha Rahaman
(Upminster), the highest placed eligible competitor, finishing on 4½/6 was Essex U150 Champion.
The
Minor
was won by Dipak Shah (Harrow/Kenya) with a clean score of 6/6.
Essex Championship
There was a tie for the Essex Championship between Andrew Lewis and Subin Sen, both of whom play for Ilford. They both scored 4½ in the Open and had identical sum-of-progressive-scores (17). A tie-break was therefore arranged to be played over two 30-30 Rapidplay games, which was won by Subin Sen. Report, games and pictures
