Plate Preliminary Round
Ken Groce comments: "We did well to hold Thurrock in the first round. Thurrock raised their game in Rd 2 to win the match."
Report by Gavin Strachan: Upminster were favourites to win this match with their grading advantage. Although this was the case, Brentwood still managed to win the first round after some fantastic wins from Bob Hammond on board 1, Gavin Strachan on board 3 and Rob Killeen on board 5. With only a point difference, the match was finely poised. Unfortunately, Brentwood somewhat ran out of steam in the second round. Good wins on the top boards from Robert Gill and Les Crane, who had the better of Jeff MacWain in both rounds, as well as Andy Robertson and Martin McCall were enough to secure a fine win. |

Plate Final |
This looks like it was a humdinger of a Final! Thurrock battled hard in the first round to overcome the grading deficit on boards 3-6 and not only shared the points but had a large board count advantage to take into the second round. Upminster needing to score 3½, had to raise their game in Round 2, but there was again little between the sides. The points were once more shared on the two middle boards and Upminster again won the bottom two. So, with David Haydon's expected double over Robert Gill, the match turned on the vital half point gained by Les Crane against James Redburn. Upminster win the plate by the one point in 12. |
