It's Barking! - Upminster win the Plate

The finals of the Rapidplay Knockout competitions were played on 30th September, 2009, at Thurrock. The two matches produced widely varying results.

Barking were convincing winners by 8½-3½ over Writtle. Having taken a 4-2 R1 lead, Barking were on their guard against the 'come-back kings'. Wind back to 2005 and we find this exact same situation, Barking leading Writtle 4-2 after R1. On that occasion, Writtle staged a famous turnaround, winning the second round 4-2 to level the scores and snatch the trophy on board count. This time, however, there was to be no repeat as Barking improved on their first round, to win the second 4½-1½ for a crunching 8½-3½ victory.

The teams in the Plate, however, could not have been closer without invoking the tie-break. Upminster edged the Plate by the narrowest margin, winning 6½-5½ against Thurrock.

Congratulations to both winning teams and thanks to Thurrock for hosting Finals Night.
