Lightning Cross Table

A modest entry of 14, lacking David Sands (on National Club duty with Ilford) and David Sherman, nonetheless gave rise to an open and exciting contest with no fewer than four players being on the leading score at the start of the last round, Roland Payne, Andrew Brett, Robin Slade and Dave Chandler, all 3/4. This was brought about through the occurrence of six drawn games in the first four rounds (6/21), an unusually high proportion at lightning chess.

In the final round pairings, Roland Payne beat Andrew Brett and Dave Chandler beat Robin Slade. The tie-break (sum of progressive scores) gave first place in the tournament to speed specialist Roland Payne, but as he was not eligible for the Championship (not being a current registered Essex player) the trophy and title of ECA Lightning Champion, was presented to Dave Chandler.
