Essex Team Blitz Championship 2008

Sponsored by King & King

20th July 2008 at Ilford
Controller: Ivor Smith

The original booking at Wanstead fell through and we had to relocate at short notice. Fortunately, Ilford CC came to the rescue with a booking for the hall at their regular club venue. Whether the late change of venue affected the entry is not certain, but eight teams from eight Clubs is the smallest for this event. A composite team formed from Maldon and Chelmsford members participated. The hall at Ilford's venue is the same architecture as the hall at Wanstead House and only marginally smaller, so there was plenty of room.

Small the entry may have been, but a keen contest ensued. The winners, Cavendish, did not have things all their own way and Ilford held the lead through rounds 4, 5 and 6. But in the last round, Ilford, leading by a point, could only manage 2½–1½ against bottom team Upminster and Cavendish steamed to the front with 4–0 against Wanstead B, to win by half a point.

Some Blitz views

Upper left: the hall at Ilford CC's venue in Beehive Lane afforded comfortable accommodation for both events.

Above right: Ilford v Upminster in the last round cost the home Club dear when they won by only 2½-1½ against the back markers whom Cavendish had beaten 4-0.

Left: Chelmsford/Maldon on the left v Wanstead A. Wanstead was the only Club to enter two teams.
