Incorporating the North Essex Rapidplay Championship Venue: Writtle Community Association Date: Sunday 19 July 2009 Time Control: 30 minutes per player per game Controllers: Andrew Brett, Ivor Smith Pictures: Pic 1 | Pic 2 | Pic 3 | Pic 4 | Pic 5 | Pic 6 | Pic 7 | Pic 8 This year, an U125 section was introduced, giving players in that grading band a separate prize fund to play for. We were hoping that the new section would encourage more entries than materialised, just 12 players contesting the Open and a similar number in the U125. The total entry of 24 was, however, a marked improvement on last year's 16 - who all played in the one section - and nearer the 26 which entered in 2007, but was not enough to cover the increased prized fund. Also, two small sections place a strain on the Swiss pairing system and Ivor had quite a problem drawing the later rounds. Open Pos Player Grade 1 2 3 4 5 6 Pts SPS SOS

Columns marked: SPS = Sum of Progressive Scores; SOS = Sum of Opponents Scores Andrew Lewis was again clearly the class of the field, particularly with Russell White being markedly off form (1 out of 4 before finishing win, win). Andrew disposed of allcomers until the last two rounds when he was held to a draw by Jeff Goldberg and then exceeded the time limit in the last round against Robin Slade, but Robin was down to a lone king and threw in an illegal move (not noticed except by the spectators) in the scramble and was on the point of being mated when rescued by the clock for a draw. But this was sufficient for Andrew Lewis to retain his crown by a point with 5/6. Jeff Goldberg, having won the Lightning Championship a week earlier, was undefeated, finishing second a point behind. The prize list was completed in a three-way tie =3rd on 3½, between Ian Hunnable, David Chandler and Robin Slade. David Chandler gained the North Essex crown on tie-break (SPS) from Robin Slade. The early leaders were Peter Brander and John Lambert, both of whom started with 3/3. Their clash in Round 4 settled the issue in favour of Peter Brander. John Lambert then lost to a recovering Michael Coughtrey, having started with ½/2, and Peter Brander was the winner with a round to spare when defeating Mario Cassar in the penultimate round. Peter availed himself of the luxury of losing to Phil Foley in the last, to finish in the lead on 5/6. Michael Coughtrey, having slipped past John Lambert, finished second on 4½. There was a Junior prize, provided by the David Wood Memorial Trust, for which there was a three-way tie on 3 points between Edward Ballard, Brian Chan and William Cheung. The Junior trophy was awarded to Edward Ballard on tie-break. |
