ECF Counties Rapidplay 2010 - 18 September 2010

This was an outstanding performance by the Essex first team although the start was not quite so convincing with the team losing 3½-2½ on the six boards played in round 1 against Middlesex. However things very much improved after that. To lose only two games out of the 48 played is a measure of the team's success against some very strong opposition. Our players had undoubtedly benefited by taking part in the Summer K.O. Rapidplay and/or the recent Essex Individual Rapidplay in Brentwood.

Not surprisingly our second team found it difficult, being well outgraded in many of the games. In distinct contrast to the first team they started well, in the first round defeating both Surrey and Beds by 3½-2½. Unfortunately things went distinctly downhill after that. However there were still some excellent individual performances with a number of players scoring positive results against significantly higher rated players.

The handicap prize went to Surrey but a measure of our first team's remarkable performance can be gauged by the fact that they also finished as runner's up in this aspect of the tournament.

It was a pity that we didn't have the opportunity of playing against teams from the Midlands and the North. A chance to gain revenge against Lancashire for our semi-final defeat in last season's English inter-counties would have been nice.

Totals and placings: Essex A 37½; Middlesex, 28; Bedfordshire, 21½; Surrey, 17½; Essex B, 15½.

Handicap Trophy: 1 Surrey 4.78; 2 Essex A 2.1; 3 Middx -0.14; 4 Essex B -3.01; 5 Beds -3.73
The handicap was based upon each team's performance against expectation.
