‘Quick’ Sands spoils Goldberg hat trick
David Sands (right) on his way to victory against Matthew Piper

Jeff Goldberg, Matthew Piper, 3˝; Report by Ian Hunnable The field of 16 – an encouragingly large entry after several seasons of decline - included a number who had played in the Essex Team Blitz Championship in the morning, plus the usual clutch of speed specialists. For the interest of all players, there were a few more lower-graded entries than usual, to balance the power-players Matthew Piper (Cavendish) 213 and David Sands (Barking) 212, plus Roland Payne David Sherman and defending Champion Jeff Goldberg (Barking). Play started a little late as a result of a slight overrun of the morning event. However, once the buzzer got going, keen competition ensued. Jeff Goldberg was on a hat trick of Essex Lighting Championships at the start of today’s event, a feat never done before. However, the presence of a couple of 200+ entrants indicated a stern challenge. The first casualties among the quintet of favourites were Roland Payne and David Sherman. Jeff Goldberg took a ˝ point off Matthew Piper in R3, while David Sands forged into the sole lead with a win over Larry Marden. This brought the clash of the two big guns in R4 where ‘Quick’ Sands showed his class at speed chess to take the full point. The tournament up to now had gone to order for the defending Champion: the game between the two top-graded players had resulted in an outright result and he had taken a half off the loser of that clash. This left him just half a point behind the sole leader, Sands, against whom he was paired in the final round; winner takes all. Sadly for Goldberg, his dream of becoming the first player to land a hat trick of Essex Lightning Championships foundered on a blunder as early as move 16, followed immediately by another, bringing proceedings to a premature end. Sands therefore took the Lightning Championship with a clean score, 5/5. Many congratulations to him on a fine performance. |
