However, events did not unfold quite as these bald facts might have indicated, as Middlesex took an early two point lead when the "Batchelor boys", father and son who coincidentally had identical grades, won in short order at the expense of Neville Twitchell and Gavin Strachan. From this tense point, Essex scored 3½-½ to close out a win by a more convincing margin than had at one time seemed likely.  A clean sweep might have been made of these last four games had Philip Gregory not ended up in the theoretically drawn ending of rook + bishop's pawn + rook's pawn against rook.  However, Larry Marden, Ian Reynolds and Ray Purse made no mistake.
