These two events, were both held 12th July at Ilford CC's venue. The morning event, the Team Blitz, attracted only six clubs - eight teams - the lowest ever. It was, however, very exciting with the result depending on the last round matches, Cavendish v Ilford A and Writtle v Barking A. Ilford took the title, breaking the recent domination by Cavendish. The Lightning Championship, played in the afternoon, also suffered a paucity of entries, only eight individuals being attracted - for a five round Swiss! It was won, however, with a fine performance by Jeff Goldberg who scored 5/5, including wins over David Sands, David Sherman and Roland Payne. Team Blitz | Lightning
In today's National Club Finals, played at Golden Lane Estate, London EC1 (the London League central venue), Wanstead won the Major Final with a convincing 4-1 victory over St Albans, while Thurrock were successful in the U100 Plate Final, winning 3½-½ against Forest of Dean. Welcome to the new ECA Website. You may already have visited the new-style pages which have been available for a few days, running in parallel with the existing site. The new site design is now being rolled out as the new face of the ECA website. This is still, however, 'work in progress'. The site is now quite substantial and to complete the job of converting the whole site will take quite a bit longer. (You may also find some 'rough edges'; be patient.) For now, the principal pages for current activities have been transferred and that which has not yet received the treatment is still available online via the 'Visit the old site' link in the at the top of this page. The areas which remain to be dealt with largely cover the Archive of prior seasons' activities. Principally: if it is current, then the new pages will be all you require, while if it is something that happened in prior seasons (before 2008-09) then you will probably need to 'Visit old site'. The Annual General Meeting of the Essex Chess Association was held 30th June 2009 at Wanstead House. In a largely unremarkable meeting of routine business, the standout feature was the significant increase in the ECA Game Fee which includes the ECF Game Fee (which is now 50p pppg for next season). The meeting recognised the need to raise fees and approved the Treasurer's proposal to increase the ECA Game Fee to 65p per player per game.
Essex U175 failed in their bid to reach the ECF final two years in a row, losing their semi-final to Lancs, at Gaddesby, Leics, by 9-7. In the other semi-final, Middlesex failed to get past Yorkshire, losing 8½-7½, so the final will be a "War of the Roses" - Lancs v Yorks. Strangely, the Open final will also be Lancs v Yorks, so both sides will have their resources tested that day. Lancs beat Middlesex 8½-7½, (playing alongside the Essex-Lancs U175 semi-final) while Yorks crushed Kent 10½-5½ in the other Open semi. A further Roses battle occurred in the U150 semi-final; Yorks gained the, possibly dubious, honour of fielding a third team on Finals day, by beating Lancs 12-4. Still, you have to be in it to win it. ECA Stats | SCCU GPC retains single session for EL At a meeting of the GPC held on Wednesday 20-May-2009 at Brentwood it was decided, by a 10-8 majority to retain the single session. The time control, however, has been changed and will be All moves in 90 minutes, carried by a 12-2 majority. A further proposal allows team Captains to have a mobile phone on silent (vibrate) mode until he has a full team. Nem con. Minutes |
