Charity Rapidplay Tournament - 4th September

A Charity Chess Rapidplay tournament is being organised by John Jestico (Wanstead & Woodford CC) on behalf of the Redbridge Branch of the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Venue: The Marjorie Collins Centre, Grove Road, Chadwell Heath, Romford RM6 4XF

Format: 6 rounds R30 Rapidplay
Round 1 starts 9.30 am
Round 6 finishes 5.15 pm

Sections: Three sections U180, U150, U120

Prizes: £50 to the winner of each section.

Ilford (right) meet Wanstead in R6 [Photo: Ian Hunnable]The Team Blitz and Lightning Championships were held at Ilford CC on 26th June, slightly earlier than usual. The entry of 10 teams once more staged a morning of invigorating blitz chess, without being able to change the result: Cavendish again!

The afternoon event, the Lightning Championship, was one of the more open events of its type, due mainly to the unusually high number of drawn games. With only one round to go, the leader, David Sherman, was only half a point ahead of a chasing pack of four players. Only speed-specialist Roland Payne managed to win out of this chasing group, while David Sherman ground down Ivor Smith in the endgame to make their chase fruitless. Read more...

The only Essex team to make it through to the Finals, the U100 squad brought home the Leicester bacon in a Final victory of 8½-3½ over Warwickshire - a repeat of last year's success.

Congratulations to the team and all the squad throughout the season, to Malcolm and his splendid organisation skills. Essex is proud of you!  Read more...
