Writtle have reached the Final of the Rapidplay Knockout with a board count win away to Wanstead. Matches between Writtle and Wanstead are always close and this one was no exception. The teams shared one round each, by the same score, but Writtle won on board count. Read More...

The British Championships in Torquay, which finished last weekend, can be accounted one of the most successful for Essex interests. No fewer than five entries in the main event, the British Championship, all acquitted themselves well and had an exceptionally good last round, scoring 4/5 between them without loss. You can find all the details in the page we have been running following the exploits of our "lads" throughout the event. You will now find all the Essex games played in the British Championship in the 'Essex at the British' database, plus an offering from the U150. All the daily 'Follow the lads...' bulletins are available. Read more...
Lawrence Trent once more showed his resilience by coming back after a defeat by a GM to win his next game in the eighth round of British Championship in Torquay. And what a win! A brilliant attacking game by the Essex man putting IM Gary Lane to the sword. A knight sac (21...Nxg2) sparked off a coruscation of sacrifices in a sustained and brutal attack. Never mind it wasn't all sound, the unremitting onslaught was hard to defend against. You can find the game in our Day 9 report: Read more...
From our Roving Reporter: The East Saxons team, consisting exclusively of players from Essex, outscored the competition for a convincing win in this year's quiz night at the British Championships, hosted by Kevin Staveley.
Round 5 of the British Championship saw Lawrence Trent in a Board 1 pairing with GM David Howell. From a Giuoco Piano, a brief middlegame skirmish was followed by a rapid reduction of material leading to a R & P ending where Howell had the outside majority. After some repetition of moves to reach the first time control, with assured technique, Howell advanced his majority to force Lawrence Trent's resignation, cutting short the Essex man's moment in the sun. Lawrence Trent won his fourth round British Championship game against GM Simon Williams in stirring fashion. He is now on the leading score of 3½/4 since the top board pairing Gawain Jones v David Howell, both on 3 at the start of the round, was drawn. Read more...
This year, an U125 section was introduced, giving players in that grading band a separate prize fund to play for. We were hoping that the new section would encourage more entries than materialised, just 12 players contesting the Open and a similar number in the U125. The total entry of 24 was, however, a marked improvement on last year's 16 - who all played in the one section - and nearer the 26 which entered in 2007, but was not enough to cover the increased prized fund. Also, two small sections place a strain on the Swiss pairing system and Ivor had quite a problem drawing the later rounds. Read more...
We learn from the ECF Website that publication of the new Grading List will be delayed and is now expected to appear "not later than 10th August". Read it here... |
