Wanstead Simul

The Wanstead against GM Peter Wells on Tues 22 Semptember will now be held in Roding Room at Wanstead House, instead of the Hall. Start 7.15 pm.


John Littlewood

From Stewart Reuben (16 Sep): "Sadly John Littlewood died this morning. I have no further details at this time. These will appear on the ECF website in due course."

In the days before we had bucket loads of GMs, John Littlewood and his brother Norman were at the forefront of English chess, just behind Essex's Jonathan Penrose. John competed in the British Championship this year at Torquay, at the age of 78.  More...

Barking v Writtle in the Final

Barking overcame Ilford in the second Knockout Semi-Final, winning heavily, 5-1, in the first round, before sharing the points in R2 to win 8-4. Barking now meet Writtle in the Final, to be played on 30th September at Thurrock, alongside the Plate Final, Thurrock v Upminster. Read more...


Wanstead GM Simul - 22 September

Wanstead & Woodford Chess Club will be staging a Simultaneous Display later this month given by Grandmaster Peter Wells.

Date: 22nd September 2009  Time: 7.15pm prompt
Venue: Boaden Hall (rear of) Wanstead House - Venue Link

GM Peter has agreed to take on up to 30 opponents and there are still some places available which are offered to members of the Association on a "first-come, first served" basis, at a cost of £10.00 per person (£5.00 for Juniors).

To reserve your board, please use the document via the "Entry" link below (which is a letter circulated to Essex Clubs) and completing and returning the tear off slip at the end of the letter, as indicated therein, together with your cheque payable to "Wanstead & Woodford Chess Club".  Entry | Peter Wells


It's Thurrock v Upminster

The Knockout Plate Final is settled: Thurrock will play Upminster. Thurrock had a 7-5 win over Roding & Loughton, while Upminster, despite losing the first round of games, came back to win by 7½-4½ against Brentwood 1. Read more...

Jubilee Handbook published

Of immense historical importance to the Association, we are today publishing on the website a scanned version of the "Jubilee Handbook" produced by the 'Essex County Chess Association' (as it was then) to celebrate its Jubilee in 1948.
