The Essex Open team came through its ECF Preliminary Round "starter for 10" against Greater Manchester, to go into the main ECF Counties' Championship draw. On arrival at Syston, Essex found their opponents below full strength and, after some early hiccups, came through with an 11½-4½ victory. In the quarter-final Essex will meet Norfolk. Details and games...
Essex U160 availed themselves of the luxury of defeat in their last match of the SCCU campaign, going down 5½-10½ at home to Herts. Fortunately, they had already assured themselves of the U160 Championship in their previous match. However, no-one wants to lose just because you can afford to; captain David Payne swallowed his pride, describing the result as "very disappointing". Details...
Needing to win by a large margin in their last match against Herts, the Essex Open team rose to the occasion with a resounding 13-3 victory, to secure qualification to the national stages of the ECF County Championship. Acting Captain, Ivor Smith, and his squad deserve every praise for this supreme effort. They now have to contest a Preliminary round against the 3rd placed team in the Midlands. More... In their last match of the season, the U140 team were not able to conclude with the desired win, but equalled their highest score of the previous fixture, in losing 9½-6½ away to Herts. So, a disappointing season, but not as pointless as their score (sorry for that!); 27 players experienced County chess with the U140 team this season and will come back stronger next season. Details... The Essex U100 team, already SCCU Champions, completed the season with a 100% record, with a home win against Surrey. Details...
You have to go
back to 2003-04 to find more than three teams participating; 1 Essex 6½/10; 2 Herts 6; 3 Middx 3½; 4 Surrey 3.
The holders Writtle once more secured the Essex Chess League Championship, with a 5½-2½ routine away win against Wanstead II. Their record is now five in a row, 10th title in the last 13 years, 12 in all. Renewed congratulations! Writtle still have a game in hand and can make it a three point winning margin with a home win against Barking on 21st April. At the start of this season's competition, this fixture was viewed as the probable showdown. Instead, Barking I can do no better than third and Wanstead I are runners up. We also congratulate Upminster II on securing the Division 3 title without even playing, when Barking II failed to beat Ilford 3.
With the success of the Open team in making it through to the quarter-finals, it is now apposite to take stock of the national stages of the ECF County Championships. Essex have four teams in the ECF QF draw: Open, U180, U160, U100 - a rich season! The QF draw gives these pairings for the Essex teams: Open: v Norfolk U180: v Yorkshire U160: v Staffordshire U100: v Lancashire Matches are nominally to be played on 22 May, but with qualifiers in three adjacent sections we will doubtless seek to play one of these on another date.
