Today, we welcome John Philpott (johnu175) to the editorial ranks on the essexchess blog and he opens with a scene-setting item on today's last two semi-final County Championship matches: U180 Essex v Notts (at St Neots), U160 Essex v Yorks (at Barkby). The Essex Open team’s semi-final against Lancs in Syston 13th June, ended in disappointment for the East Saxons. The team went down 9-7, a scoreline enhanced by Essex wins in the last two games to finish. Read more...
Congratulations to Malcolm Crane and the U100 team who reached the ECF final with a convincing 7½-4½ victory over Lancashire. They won the match over the top seven boards where they allowed just two draws. Details... In the last week before the event, entries reached an encouraging level of 94, but the usual rush of late entries - 22 last year - was this year only a trickle with just 12 entering on the day. However, the event passed off successfully, particularly for Essex players in the Open and the Minor. Read more...
Essex U180 defeated the 2009 U175 Champions, Yorkshire, 8½-7½ in the ECF quarter-final at Syston. Yorkshire gifted Essex a point's start by the non-appearance of their Board 8 and that, of course, was the margin of victory. In the semi-final Essex will meet Notts who beat Beds 8½-7½. Details... There was more good news for the County in the U160 section, where Essex beat Staffs 9½-6½ and progress to a semi-final encounter with Yorkshire. Details... As the Open team were successful in their QF on 9 May and the U100 team did not have a quarter-final pairing (only one QF, Kent v Yorks, Essex play Lancs in the semi-final), this means Essex have all four qualified teams through to the national semis. Semi-final pairings: Open: Essex v Lancs U180: Essex v Notts U160: Yorks v Essex U100: Lancs v Essex
