We hear from David Payne the sad news of the passing of one of the more colourful characters of Essex chess, Maurice Siegel at the age of 77 on Wednesday 1 September. He died of a heart attack whilst in hospital. More...
Upminster CC are the latest Club to introduce a website which you can find at: http://www.spanglefish.com/upminsterchessclub/ This is a lively site with, in addition to the usual admin items, a page of "Chess Games" which are in fact some interesting positions of the "White to play and win variety" and another page with videos. While we are on the subject, Thurrock CC announce another change of URL for their website which is now at: http://www.spanglefish.com/thurrockchessclub/ Both sites can be found on our Links page: ECA Site Office: Links which can be accessed from the foot of every page on this site.
The team - lacking only Ian Reynolds from last year's winning combination - was Ivor Smith, Colin Ramage, John Philpott, David and Jane Smith. John Philpott on the essexchess Blog says: "...the quiz team swung into action to ensure that, whatever else happens, there will be one British Championship title coming home to Essex." An open-top bus tour is planned.
What a story! Fledgling U75 hopefuls one year, take flight and win the U100 the next! The ECF U100 County Champions are Essex, having defeated Warwickshire 8½-3½ in the final in Leicester on 10th July; a thoroughly convincing performance. The Essex Chess Association has a new President. David Smith had announced his intention to stand down after a two year term of Office; the meeting elected Ivor Smith in his place. Twice in one day, Essex lost a County Championship semi-final on board count. For Lady Bracknell, this is carelessness. For Essex, this is business as usual. Essex U180 met Notts in a Methodist Church in Eaton Ford, St. Neots, tied 8-8 but lost on board count. Read more...
