Colin Ramage reports:

A comfortable win for an Ilford side which looks very strong over the top four boards, where they totally dominated in this match. To quote Chelmsford skipper Robin Slade: "We were stuffed!".

Colin Ramage reports:

On paper the teams looked fairly evenly matched. In the event, Barking ran out easy winners - perhaps the lengthy journey from Maldon did not help the away team.

John Philpott reports: "The first round was closely contested and looked as if it would be narrowly shaded by Upminster. However, right at the end Graham Brown, who had been a piece up, contrived to lose on time to Mustapha Rahaman and what should have been a narrow 2½-3½ deficit turned into a daunting 1½-4½. Wanstead B showed no signs of overturning the deficit in the second round and Upminster romped to victory without losing a single game in the match.

The Webmaster reports:

Roding & Loughton caused the Wanstead first string a little more trouble than the visitors anticipated, but the task was completed comfortably enough. Li Wu and Larry Marden both suffered surprise defeats in the first round, but recovered their composure for the second.

* Played at Barking.

Colin Ramage comments:

Upminster wer 'home' but in fact chose to play at Barking. Very one-sided considering that below board 1 there was not much between the two teams.

The Webmaster reports:

Ilford, with a similar line-up to their first round crunch of Chelmsford - but strengthened by the inclusion of Sid Kalinsky - booked their passage into the final handing out a 5-1 crushing  in the first round of games. The visitors fought back gamely in the second round to share the points, but could do no more than salvage some self-respect.

Colin Ramge comments:

The non-appearance of Roding & Loughton's board 2 may have cost Roding this closely-contested match.

Colin Ramage comments:

Chelmsford rallied after trailing in the first round, or, as Robin Slade, the Chelmsford skipper put it: "Chelmsford rallied magnificently as their beer kicked in!"

Report by the Webmaster:

Congratulations to Chelmsford on winning the KO Plate Final, the first time we have had a Plate competition associated with the Essex KO in any of its forms.

Chelmsford held a clear grading advantage over the first two boards, but the home side had a clear advantage over the bottom three, with board three being even. Chelmsford scored a form 3½-½ on the top two and had the bonus of shading board 3, thus securing a 5-1 score in the top half. The Chelmsford bottom boards had to score 1½ points for victory but managed the excellent result of 2-4 whereas the home team might have expected (and, in the event, certainly needed) to score maximum points on these boards.

So very well done to Chelmsford on a good fighting performance, which earns them free entry into next season's knockout.

2003 standard play grades used.
