The Summer Rapidplay Knockout that finished in the Autumn!  Dates had proved difficult to find and 14th October was the earliest suitable.

The final turned out to be the proverbial "match of two halves". The Wanstead team turned up at the approriate time, but their chess followed an hour or so behind. Barking took full advantage and their 5-1 first round score seemed insuperable.

Wanstead, however, had other ideas and fought back strongly in R2 to take the top three boards. After Colin Ramage had induced Barclay into a drawing trap, Wanstead now needed to win both bottom boards, but Berkley and Purse held firm. Had Paul Barclay managed to beat Colin Ramage, the scores for each team would have been identical and neither board count, nor board elimination would have split the match, requiring a replay. (Dreams. Dreams.)

So congratulations to Barking on victory in one of the most dramatic finals seen.

Astonishing! Despite Roding & Loughton winning both games on board 1 (by default), they could only tie on board count (17-17) by dint of having won both bottom board games! Wanstead 'B' win on elimination of bottom board.

Both sides experienced distruption of their intended line-up due to non-arrivals. Wanstead had Philip Staniland on hand to cover for Keith Jones and Ilford called on Jason Klimach's father Jan to cover for Dana Hawarami, who arrived in time to take his place in R2.

The Ilford first team were always favourite to take this match against Wanstead's second string. The contest was over with the first round result of 4½-1½ to Ilford and the visitors were confident enough to have their team photo taken at half-time. In round 2, bolstered by the arrival of Dana Hawrami, Ilford extended their lead by winning 5-1 for an overall score of 9½-2½.
