Colin Ramage: In the other preliminary match, another close result with Wanstead II providing stiff resistance to an, on paper, superior Upminster team. I understand that the Upminster board 6 broke down on the M25.

3-3

Colin Ramage: In the preliminary round, Barking B met Roding & Loughton, the visitors emerging winners by a narrow margin, perhaps thankful that Barking skipper Mike Cresswell found himself a player short. John Campbell and Simon Moth alternated the default.

Barking I had a comfortable victory over Upminster, aided by a wipe-out in game  1. At least Upminster fought back to win the return.

Barking next go away to Ilford and Upminster meet Basildon in the Plate semi-final.

Report by John White

Having expected stronger opposition, Barking had got their strongest team out and this meant Ilford were outgraded on the all boards except board one.

In round one, Jeff Goldberg gave up a passed pawn for several of his opponent’s. Colin Ramage won against the King’s Gambit and Steve Berkley sacrificed against the French. Ray Purse underestimated the strength of Ron Franklin’s h-file play. 4–2 to Barking.

In the second round, boards 1 and 3 were decided by endgame advantages.  Colin Ramage sacrificed a bishop on h6 to force home his mating attack and Sid Kalinsky conceded when Jeff Goldberg was about to go three pawns ahead. Steve Berkley drew easily after exchanging queens in the opening and although Ray Purse also drew, his opponent missed clear chances to win.

A convincing winning margin in this keen local derby, but how massive was the performance of Writtle’s top two boards, particularly Graham Moore beating Russell White twice!

Writtle win on tie-break

By Ivor Smith

Anybody who believes that chess can’t be exciting should have been at this match! This was a remarkable comeback after losing the first round 4-2 and the final result could hardly have been closer. The tea break and a brief team talk clearly helped although one or two thought that my decision to collect board fees at that time was a bit unreasonable and perhaps a criticism of the first half performance. They are probably right.

It was was never going to be easy against the champions who came with a full strength team, one that has plenty of rapidplay experience. Chess at 30 minutes each on a clock will always favour the younger team so Barking certainly held the advantage there. Although Chris had a disappointing evening, not helped by a rough day at the Office, others, notably our board 1, eventually got things right. Graham, having beaten Russell White 2-0 in the semi-final against Chelmsford, scored another fine result to finish with a grading performance of 235 over the four games!

Barking were not helped by defaulting board 3 in both rounds, but were clearly out-gunned. Colin Ramage commented: “Mike Cresswell scored all Barking’s points - just as well he turned up!”

Roding & Loughton, having had two matches in the knockout (Preliminary and Round 1) were playing their third fixture, but were unlucky not to have anything easier than a pairing with Wanstead A.
