Chessexonline No. 006

Chessex Volume 12 Issue 1

Version control: Current version 006.i  07-Jul-2008

The first embryonic edition of No. 006 is online, click here
No. 006 currently has the match table of the U175 County Final and a report on the Southend Congress. The latter item will be switched into Issue 005 shortly, with the Ilford Congress taking its place in No. 006.

Chessexonline No. 005

Chessex Volume 11 Issue 6

Version control: Current version 005  02-Aug-2008 (final)

The fifth issue of Chessexonline has now been finalised. Click here to access No. 005. Printed copies to postal subscribers are enveloped and stamped and will be in the post Wednesday 13-Aug-2008.

  • What's in it? The Ilford 2008 congress report has been moved into issue 006 and the Southend Congress - which preceded Ilford - has been put in its rightful place in 005.
  • Navigation Remember - you can navigate through the document on screen via the 'bookmarks' available in your pdf reader. Also, the games can be played through on screen using the DGT game viewer (see next item).
  • Game viewer View games on screen in the DGT pgn viewer. Change: There is now only one link to the game viewer, which is in the Contents pane on the title page. (You can always reach the Contents pane via its bookmark.) Just click on the word 'Link' to open the viewer. Keep it open while you browse the issue on screen and call it up and select the games you want to go through when you reach them.
  • How do I get it? Chessexonline is a pdf document, so you will need a pdf reader such as the Adobe Reader, to open it. See the icon link at the bottom of the page if you need this free software download. Chessexonline 005 is not a download, but is simply a linked document intended to be browsed like other web pages. With older versions of Adobe Reader the document may open in its own window, rather than in a browser window. If this happens to you, close down the document, and click the above link with the RIGHT mouse button and see if there is a menu option ‘Open Weblink in browser’ which is tidier.

New issues will in time be added to the downloadable issues..

Previous issues are still available from the downloads section below. See the ReadMe1st file for download instructions and User Guide.

Chessexonline features:

  • on screen navigation via bookmarks - no more fumbling through pages trying to find the item you want!
  • all games in each issue are also supplied as pgn files as part of the download and can be played through on screen using your pgn viewer.
  • All games published in Chessexonline are also available in a single archive, the Chessexbase downloadable pgn database, together with backloaded games from old issues of CHESSEX - see Downloads;
  • alternatively, you can print it out and read it the old fashioned way.

I am interested that you should enjoy Chessexonline to the full. If you have any problems downloading and accessing the Chessexonline features or have any suggestions for its future development, please email me: Ian Hunnable

What do I require to download Chessexonline?

To download and use Chessexonline you will need a pdf reader - I recommend the Adobe Reader which can be downloaded from the button link below - and (optionally) a pgn reader to play through the games on screen. If you do not yet have a pgn reader I now recommend the excellent DGT Chess Theatre program. This is a free download and is well worth having. Follow the download link below.

Adobe Reader

.pdf files (Portable Document Format) require a pdf reader such as the Adobe Reader. Click on the icon below to download Adobe Reader. This is free to download, but its a biggy. For Broadband users, this will be no problem, but for those with a standard 56K modem it will take a long time. Pick a time when your phone line will not be in demand or, better still, use a download manager which will enable you to split the download over several sessions. You only have to do the download once and it is worth it.
