The Southend Easter Chess Congress celebrated its Golden Jubilee in style. 143 entries were distributed over seven events headed by the Jack Speigel Memorial Tournament for eight invited Masters. 69 players participated in the Southend Open. In addition to the usual sections, there were two 'specials': Golden Jubilee A and Golden Jubilee B. Jim Plaskett won the Jack Speigel Memorial with 5½/7 with Essex star Lawrence Trent third on 4. Essex interests were naturally well-represented throughout with Southend stalwart David Cannan winning Golden Jubilee B (an U130 section) on 3½/5 and Ivor Smith winning Five Round Swiss 'A' with 3½/5. Full details can be found on theSouthend CC website: 50th Congress. |
