ESSEX CHAMPIONSHIPS 2001

Clashes with the National Club finals and the junior Gigafinal in Sheffield meant that the entry for this year's Essex Championship was down but the quality of play remained high. Eddie Dearing, the pre-tournament favourite, was faced with a particularly hard game in round 3 when Robin Slade appeared to have the advantage before going astray towards the end. This set up a clash in round four between Eddie and last year's champion, Marc Brazier. Marc, playing black, failed to develop his king side pieces and paid the penalty. This left us with the 'ideal' pairing (at least from the spectators point of view) with the two highest graded players meeting in the last round. Russell White understandably went all out for the win but his early h4 against the Dragon turned out to be premature. A rook and pawn ending was reached and in the last few minutes Eddie gained both time and material to secure the full point.

Meanwhile, Tom Winter defeated jack Speigel with a nice combination to take the U150 title. My thanks to Peter Walker for his help during the weekend.
