The idea of a team representing Essex to play in the 1st World Sentiors Team Championship was that of Ivor Smith and he assembled a side comprising:
Jim Howson (4th in the British Championship 1958, Essex Champion 1967-8)
George Ellison (British Senior Champion 2002)
Ivor Smith (British Senior Champion 1999)
Aidan Corish (Winner of the Major at Ilford this year)
to play under the name of Essex in the Isle of Man, 5-12th October 2004.
There were already three teams representing England (England 3 being idiomatically styled "Britain 3" as they included a Scot). "Essex" at least said more than "England 4" would have done.
Essex were not of course expecting to win a competition boasting several national sides, but apparently had a chance against some of the other teams and, perhaps one or two of the other England/Britain line-ups.
Against the national teams, Essex did indeed struggle, securing only 2½ game points against Israel, Germany, Italy and England 1 and 2. Against the other three teams they met, they garnered 10 points to finish 8th on 12½.
Rating performances of the Essex team: Jim Howson 1955; George Ellison 2155; Ivor Smith 2085; Aidan Corish 1933; Roy Heppinstall 1926.
Wanstead's David Smith, playing for Britain 3, scored 3/8 for 1926.
Leading places : =1 Israel, Germany, 26½; 3rd Switzerland, 20; =4th Italy, England 1, 19. (12).
