Report by John Philpott After the successful revival of the pre-season Essex League Champions v President's team match at Writtle in 2004, Wanstead & Woodford, who had won both Division 1 and Division 2 in 2004/5 accepted a challenge over 16 boards. Unfortunately, Wanstead were not at full strength on the night. Their problems were compounded by the non-arrival of the scheduled boards 3 and 8, leading to Essex President John Philpott having to step in to play for his club against the President's team. With a substantial grading advantage from board 5 onwards, the President's team were clear favourites, and wins were secured on a regular basis to secure a comfortable victory. Graham Brown, the second Wanstead reserve, scored the one victory for the club despite being half an hour down on the clock and the exchange down on the board, but Nayeem Syed very nearly pulled off a second win before allowing Sid Kalinsky to wriggle out of a pawn down rook ending in the last game to finish.
