Game List Parker-O'Kelly, Essex v Kent 26.1.2002. QGA [D28], 1-0 26 moves. Annotations by Robert Parker. "A fascinating and most instructive game in which Black pays the price for a couple of indifferent moves. His King's-side, denuded of defensive pieces, succumbs to the sacrifice, after which White's two bishops prove monstrous." - Ivor Smith. Text IBN Smith-Escott (Warwickshire), Ward-Higgs 2002. Sicilian, Morra Gambit [B21], 1-0 44 moves. Annotations by Ivor Smith (slightly abridged). This game, played in the Ward-Higgs county correspondence competition 2002, was awarded a Best Game Prize. Ivor is an acknowledged expert in the Morra Gambit and here, once he creates the initial weakness with a well-timed thematic thrust (19 Nd5!), he pursues his former county colleague with a sustained and finely-judged attack. Text Myall-Donnelly, Essex v Sussex 15.6.2002. Sicilian, c3 [B22], 1-0 41 moves. Annotations by Ivor Smith. "Ivan Myall produced a magnificent combination to force a splendid victory." - Roy Heppinstall. Text Odondoo-Hanreck, Essex v Kent 6.7.2002. Nimzowitsch Defence [B00], 1-0 38 moves. Annotations by the Webmaster. A study in the accumulation of open lines by the doubling of pawns - in the final position there are four sets of doublets with one of White's split by an isolated black pawn! Text EJ Lutton-Prokopchuk, BCF Congress, Torquay 2002, Major Open R1. Sicilian (by transposition) [B23], 1-0 42 moves. Annotations by E Josiah Lutton (slightly abridged). Jossiah Lutton (BCF 158) outplays Russian GM Evgeny Prokopchuk (ELO 2189) who has no answer to the Essex youngster's K-side onslaught. Observe White's careful deployment of his forces prior to the defencing-breaching sacrifice which brings the GM's resignation. Text Ilett-Moore, Essex v Cambridgeshire, 11.5.2003. Semi-Slav, Meran variation [D47], 0-1 28 moves. Annotations by the Webmaster. The game of the match. John Moore unleashes a stunning combination, as brutal as it is unexpected. Text Gajewski-Trent, World Youth Chess Championships, Halkidiki, Greece 2003. Ruy Lopez, Classical variation [C65], 0-1 33 moves. Annotations by Lawrence Trent. When his Polish opponent varies from the accepted play with a passive continuation, Lawrence goes on the attack, at the risk of exposing his own king. Lawrence miscalculates a piece sacrifice, but solves his resulting problems in a remarkable way. Text |
