Essex U100 qualify without playing; U180s can still make it
The only two Essex teams playing this weekend both lost, yet two positive features arise. The first is that the U180 team can still qualify for the national stages. The other, less obvious, feature is that the U100 team have qualified, without playing. The win by Kent away to Surrey means that Essex and Kent both qualify as Surrey are now out of it.

The U180 defeat, Essex 7-9 Middx, at Wanstead, was not the way the U180 team wanted to start the New Year; now 0/2, it's an uphill climb from here. Skipper David Brock certainly can't be faulted for the example he has set, with his personal tally of 2/2 leading the team stats.
Three qualify from this section, so Essex still have qualification for the national stages within their scope.
Other match: Surrey 9-7 Sussex
Another heavy defeat for the U140 team, away to high-flying Surrey, has put paid to Essex qualifying. Although three qualify from this section, the current 3rd placed side, Kent, has 2 points, which is all Essex can achieve, and Kent has the tie-break disadvantage.
Other scores: Kent 6-10 Herts; Sussex 11-5 Middx
U100 Surrey 4½-7½ Kent. Essex and Kent both qualify while Essex have a game in hand in the fight for the SCCU crown.
