The Essex Chess Association ("ECA", "the Association") was founded in 1898 (as "the Essex County Chess Association", the "County" being dropped c1965) for the organisation and furtherance of chess playing in the County of Essex. The ECA is affiliated to the Southern Counties Chess Union ("SCCU"), the English Chess Federation ("ECF") and the British Chess Federation ("BCF").
The ECA organises, for member Clubs, a League competition, a team Blitz competition, and a summer Rapidplay team knockout. For individual competition the Association awards the Essex Championship and the Essex Minor (U150) Championship and runs competitions for the Rapidplay Championship and the Lightning Championship.
The ECA runs teams representing the County in the annual SCCU County Championships, at all levels: for 2011-12 - Open, U180, U160, U140, U120, U100. Teams which qualify from these competitions enter the ECF County Championships.
Clubs may affiliate to the ECA and all members of affiliated Clubs are Members of the Essex Chess Association. Individuals may join the Association as direct members. In addition, other organisations, such as other Leagues may affiliate to the Association. All as described in the ECA Constitution which can be found in the Rules section.
