Site Development Notes

We have now started archiving the 'front page' articles and have put away those created in July and August this year. These articles, however, can still be accessed, via the new Archived Articles module which appears in the green panel which you can see at the right of this page and most pages.

The Essex League pages from 1998-99 to the present are now all available once again and all appear on the Essex League index

League seasons 2003-2004 to 2006-2007 inclusive have now been moved to the league.essexchess sub-domain from the general Activities Archive. The remaining seasons will be moved shortly so that all the League data from 1998 onwards will then be in one place.

Discussions with the League Secretary have resulted in agreement that we will work towards providing web-based entry of League results. The was attempted last year, but we ran into scripting problems, so that the feature only worked if users were accessing through Internet Explorer. With the move to a server-side web platform, these problems should now be surmountable, so we will try again. When this feature is in place, we will then consider whether to take the next step of moving the League database onto the server.

The County shield has now been (re)-introduced into the site logo. Permission to use the County shield was obtained some years ago by Ivor Smith when he was Publicity Officer and the County provided artwork for us to scan for use in our publications. The ECA website included an image of the County shield in the early days of the site, but, for reasons we can no longer recall, this was dropped at one of the earlier site re-designs.

With the transfer of the summer 2011 speed events and the Essex at the British page (Sheffield 2011) the last of the 'current Activity' pages has been transferred to the new-style area of the site. The only Activity pages remaining in the old area is the Activities Archive. We have no current plans to modernise the Archive which will remain on line, accessible via a direct menu link from the front page Activities menu.

Latest development is the introduction of what is known as the "spotlight area", part of the masthead immediately below the main menu strip. This has four positions for posting "modules". One of these has been used for displaying a random image (four such images from the KO Finals are installed at the moment) while two other units are being used to highlight site content (How to DGT and Essex League) while the fourth now houses the 'Search' facility.
