Rounds 3 and 4 of the Essex Online Rapid Championships were played on the evening of 8 February (apart from a pair of games played early). Blitz abandoned

This evening’s Essex Online Blitz on lichess.org regretfully had to be abandoned when the Lichess server went down. It came back up, only to crash again and did this several times. The tournament had completed Round 1 and we were trying to get Round 2 played, when the problems began. Blitz 3 – last call

The third in the series of Essex Online Blitz tournaments takes place this evening on lichess.org, starting at 7.00 pm. Games will be played at the rate of G5+2 (5 minutes + 2 seconds per move increments on each clock per game). Essex Online Rapid Championships

The first Esssex Online Rapid Championships received an excellent entry of 35, enabling two sections – Open and U1600 – to be run, each playing 7 double-rounds (14 games) on Monday evenings. These neatly fit into the gaps between 25 January and 22 March (inclusive) in the run up to Easter, before the start of the second “classic chess” Essex Online Championships. Entries have  closed The Championships commence at 7.00 pm on Monday 25th January and will comprise the Open Championship and the U1600 Championship contended for in separate Swiss paired sections over 7 double rounds. Essex OL Rapid Championship launched

Entry deadline 7.00 pm Sunday 24 January With an extended lockdown in store, the Essex Online team has added an additional event to the 7.00 pm Monday nights programme. Starting Monday 25 January, this individual doubled-leg G20+10 Championship will fill the void between the scheduled Rapid and Blitz tournaments in the run up to Easter ahead of the second Essex Online Championship in the spring. Russell’s clean sweep

The second Essex Online Rapid, G10+5, on 11 January was won by Russell White (Writtle) with 5/5, followed by David Spearman (Wanstead), 4 and Edgar Wilson (Writtle), 3½. 16 players entered. The U1600 section, played as a 7-player all-play-all at G10+2, was won by Purba Audhora (Essex Juniors) with an excellent 5½/6, 2nd John Staplehurst (Witham) 5. Three teams were in action yesterday in the SCCU Online events. Essex Pascoe spoilt their 100% record with a loss by 5½-2½ to Surrey Inter, while Essex Philpott won by nearly the same margin, 5-3 over Kent Haddrell. Barking win Essex Online Team Blitz

The second Essex Online Team Blitz was played this morning on lichess.org and finished with a convincing victory for Barking, with 16½/20. Barking were pressed hard by Wanstead who remained just half a point behind through three rounds, but the clash between the two leaders in Round 4 ended in Barking’s favour by 3-1.
