Report by Michael Spurr

Due to a number of players being unavailable, I had some difficulty finding 16 players for this match. Thanks to those who stepped in late on and a warm welcome to David Spearman and Andy Swales, each making their debut for the U2050 team during my captaincy.

As expected, Surrey fielded a strong team and outrated us by an average of nearly 30 points a board. Still, Surrey-Essex matches are always close and this proved to be no exception, with half of the games ending in a draw.

After an early draw on Board 16, Surrey took the lead with a win on Board 6, former British Champion (in 1965) Peter Lee showing that he can still teach us youngsters a thing or two! After more draws, the Surrey lead was extended with a win on Board 3. Martin took the game on Board 10 for the first Essex win, reducing Surrey’s lead to +1. However, another win for Surrey on Board 12 took the score back to +2.

There followed some time without any further results, until I managed to get my first win in a county match for over a year on Board 15. As before, Surrey almost immediately regained the two point advantage with a win on Board 14. A further four draws followed, leaving the match score at 8-6 to Surrey with two games left.

On Board 7, Ivan had a considerable material advantage in the endgame, which he converted – Surrey 8-7 Essex – with all still to play for in the final game on Board 11. Unfortunately, Andy was playing a difficult same-colour bishop ending whilst relying on increments on the clock and his flag fell as his opponent was about to queen a pawn.

So, the final match score was 9-7 to Surrey. Although disappointing, we were outrated and Surrey away is probably the hardest match out of all the fixtures. With that out of the way first, there’s still plenty of matches to come!
