Two from two

SCCU U2050 Essex 8½-7½ Middx. At Wanstead. At the same stage last season, Essex U2050 were on 0/2 on their way to 0/3, finishing with 2/6 including double defeats v Middx. Both ghosts were laid to rest in this new campaign, following last month’s away victory v Kent with a narrow home win against Middx, for 2/2. Here, the Middx tail wagged to good effect over boards 12-16 where they scored 3½-1½ while Essex’ clear rating advantage counted for nothing, save for Malcolm Kingsley’s win and the half point on bottom board which secured the match. Elsewhere points were shared on the top four boards, with John Hodgson’s win on Board 1 and draws from Ivan and Mark Murrell who stepped in as a sub with a creditable draw. The match was won over Boards five to 11, scoring 5-2 with wins from Steve, Edgar, Robert and Madison, while Ashwin and Martin contributed draws. Read Michael Spurr’s report on the U2050 page.
