Amazing Essex double!

ECF U2050 Final: Essex 8½-7½ SurreyAt Wanstead. At one stage, Essex were four points down at E 2½-6½ S and there were some glum Essex faces. Then Essex won two in a row before another Surrey win, so Surrey were still three up at E 4½-7½ S. Just four now left in play from which the skipper had realised that Essex “only” needed 3½ as 8-8 was sufficient, Board Count for once being in Essex’ favour. But Essex only lose […]

ECF County Championships

Finals day! Two Essex teams compete in the ECF County Championships Finals today: U2050 and U1450 and in each case the opposition is Surrey. For once the Finals are being played at other than a central venue, in the case of the U2050, U1650 (Surrey v Warks) and U1450, the venue is Wanstead House. There was a central venue arranged in Nuneaton, but the booking fell through so the fallback of finding local venues kicked in. The Wanstead House matches […]

One of each

SCCU U2050: Essex 9½-6½ KentAt Wanstead. In many ways a strange afternoon. The early results produced one Kent win among a string of draws. Then a clutch of Essex wins turned things around to a two point home advantage. Yet still the match was not clear and everything remained in the balance until near the end of the match. When the dust had settled, Essex had won by a margin of three points! Essex are joint leaders with Surrey, on […]

Incredible Middx steal

SCCU U1850: Essex 7½-8½ Middx At Wanstead. Essex appeared to be set for a comfortable home win, 4 points up with five games still in play; just one more point needed. But one by one, Middx pulled back the deficit until they completed an amazing turn around to steal the points, winning the last five games to finish. Incredible. SCCU U1450: Middx 3-9 Essex At Willesden. An experience that leaves a bad taste in the mouth. Late advice from the […]

Before the match, Barking were presented with the League Championship trophy. Despite holding a clear rating […]

Essex double!

The pre-season regional County Challenge competitions, Major and Minor, attracted just three counties in the south east, Essex, Kent and Hants. Kent actually entered three teams, one in the Major two in the Minor. Essex had the fillip of winning both competitions, reward for the players’ effors and for Peter Nickals, who made all the match arrangements and team raising. Essex success in the Major was by dint of winning both matches against Kent, the key away victory being spectacular, […]
