Creeps up on you fast! The British Chess Championships have started today, at the University of Warwick, Coventry Campus. The Essex U2050 team had its semi-final against Yorkshire there a short while ago.
The British this year has been telescoped into nine days, instead of the previous 11, so the schedule is action-packed from Day 1. And already, Essex success! Wanstead’s Mary Cawdery has won the U10 Rapid with 6½/7, with Amaan Sheikh of Chingford coming 2nd on 6/7. Mary’s rating performance was 1942 off her starting rating of 1583. Exceptional! These performances were not alone, with Wanstead double Champion, Ashwin GopiKrishna, coming =2nd in the U14 with 5½/7 and Zoe Veselow completing a Wanstead trio, =2nd in the U12 Rapid also with 5½/7.
Also starting today – instead of Monday as previously – are the British Championship and the Major Open, with lots of Essex Interest. Tomorrow, Day 2, the Morning and Afternoon tournaments start. It’s all go!
