Essex double!

The pre-season regional County Challenge competitions, Major and Minor, attracted just three counties in the south east, Essex, Kent and Hants. Kent actually entered three teams, one in the Major two in the Minor. Essex had the fillip of winning both competitions, reward for the players’ effors and for Peter Nickals, who made all the match arrangements and team raising. Essex success in the Major was by dint of winning both matches against Kent, the key away victory being spectacular, […]

ECF Online Championships

The Finals were held on 18 September with full anti-cheating regimen, run by the match Arbiters on Zoom. You have to hand it to Northumberland: they entered all three online Championships, Open, Major Open, U1800 and swept the board winning all matches in all three competitions; most impressive. Essex contested the Major Open Final against the northern juggernaut and actually shaded the top nine boards by 5-4, but Northumberland batted too long and took the lowest three boards for a […]

Another good day for Essex

An away steal, a home romp and an inter Essex match too, Upstarts 4-2 Timeless, combined with two junior tournaments with over 40 entries, made for a busy day for the second Back to Real Chess Festival. Essex Major made the first away trip by an Essex County team team since County competition ceased for the pandemic in March 2020 and came away with the spoils 4½-3½, despite being heavily out-rated. Meanwhile, the Essex Minor team also beat Kent, at […]

Essex in online Minor Open Final

The last matches in the qualifiers for the online Minor Open and U1800 would see both Essex teams go through if they could win. In the other matches, Northumberland beat Hants (already out of the running) by 9½-1½, Cheshire & N Wales beat Somerset 7½-1½ (over 10 boards and one of those was 0-0) – Cheshire & N […]

North v South

The North v South challenge match is due to be repeated later in the year. Meanwhile, Essex is conducting a North v South series of its own. In the first of these in the Minor Open R3, Essex found Northumberland too well-equipped and lost 7-5. As a result, Northumberland top the table with 6/6, while Essex sit =2 on 4/6 with Cumbria and Cheshire & N Wales. The next match in Essex’ N v S series is on 17 July […]

Essex top the table

Essex had a comfortable afternoon, beating Hants by 9-3. Details, match report and all the games, link below. Just two games into the Qualifiers, so too early to get excited, but Essex head the table by half a game point over Northumberland, Essex’ next opponents on 3 July. This is likely to be the toughest match in the qualifiers and may be affected by events in the Open, in which Northumberland are also playing. Apparently Surrey were unable to muster […]

ECF Online

Essex teams are competing in the 2nd ECF Online Counties Championships, with teams in the Minor Open and U1800 sections. There was, however, a fair degree of what one might call “disinterest” in the opening encounters. In the Open and the U1800 there are only three teams in each. The Minor Open is best supported with eight teams. In the National Pool – to provide rated games for players otherwise without a game on match day – 10 boards’ pairings […]
