Essex unfortunately were well-below strength by comparison with the team (Average 1629) which faced Northumberland. Leics were particularly hard on Essex at the top, where there was not much between the ratings, Leics allowing just two draws in winning the top seven by 6-1; this was enough in itself to win the match (assuming Board Count applies). Essex fared better lower down, winning the bottom five by 3½-1½, but the damage was done.
