Report by Paul Kenning

Essex started well with two quick wins from Kyan and Matt Shaw. Well done both. Even with a two point advantage, the match looked decidedly difficult for Essex for a long time with five or six games seeming to be really uncomfortable. It was therefore a great relief when Larry eventually won to put Essex three ahead but the problems had not gone away. Losses followed and the Essex lead became wafer thin and the result of the match might easily have gone the other way.

A special thankyou to Mark Murrell for coming to watch and stepping in as a late replacement after the match had started. He was next to win from an apparently drawn position. Neville’s aggressive opening play led to a middle-game where he had two minor pieces in exchange for a rook and four pawns. It didn’t look good but he turned it round brilliantly to win a pivotal game.

Ian expertly steered his inferior position into calm waters to secure an important draw and give us at least eight points with just Martin left to finish – he won. Afterwards five or six of the Middlesex team spent ages trying to demonstrate that their player should have won. Despite Martin’s position looking precarious, they couldn’t find the win for their player. Either way this secured the match! As a team Essex showed great resolve in a difficult situation – well done everyone.

Report by Paul Kenning

On Saturday, 16th November, we welcomed Surrey to Wanstead. Again, we were able to field a strong team, which included 12 players of 170 grade and above. Indeed, I found myself unable to justify a place in the team. We duly produced an electric start and raced into a 5½-½ lead from which we never looked back. A very early win for Roman Ismailov on his debut for us, set the tone of the match and was followed by wins for Ian Hunnable, Larry Marden, Alin Chirea-Florica (another first game), John White, John Moore, Philip Gregory and Neville Twitchell. Despite some unlucky losses toward the end of the session, the result was never in doubt. Steve Rix completed a successful afternoon when he won a marathon game a long time after everyone else had finished.

A special thanks to Ben Harte for helping set up and then staying all afternoon to help clear up at the end. This was very much appreciated – thank you!

Commentary by Paul Kenning:

Well done everyone who played yesterday in a marvellous 9½–6½ win against a strong Middlesex team. The result makes us U180 SCCU Champions with two matches to spare.

In previous rounds, we have benefitted through being strong all the way down our order and out-grading our opponents on the bottom boards. This time, I am delighted to note that our success was built from the top with Kyan, Chris, Edgar and Alin producing four great wins. Further excellent successes from Martin and Ian cemented our victory. This all after going 0 – 2 down in the early stages of the match.
