Commnentary by Acting Captain, Mark Murrell
That was some team performance today and superb match play against the reigning National Champions and this season’s Northern Counties Champions who had a rating advantage (September ratings) of some 145 points (that’s nearly 20 grading points for our older team members!).
Three times the opposition took the lead only to be pegged back. Mid afternoon it was all square with five boards left to play.
Once the team finally took the lead there was no looking back. A sharp draw was followed some time later by a cannily timed draw that then set up 1 point from 2 needed (board count tie break being against us; it always is) and great to see the determination to win both and succeed. I could not have asked for more.
Wins today by Mary, Sarwayogan, David, James, Nigel and Grace. Draws by Shristri, Ashwin and John.
3½/4 from the Essex U11s was very impressive after yesterday’s junior county association final exploits; they played like seasoned county pros. Sean would have revelled in this performance. The team has already done him proud but I think this team deserves more.
Next up Staffordshire. More of the same please!

I thought the quarter final match was a superb performance but the semi was one way traffic after each team grabbed a quick win. Alice on debut induced an early blunder loss of her opponent’s queen whilst Reyannsh came up against the opposition’s dark horse who drove his King into the open.
Thereafter, the wins kept coming such that the winning line was crossed at the same time as Middlesex, playing in the other semi-final in Kent, despite starting 75 minutes later: Brendan, Shistri, Sarwayogan, David B, Kestuitis, Ashwin and Grace. Solid late draws from Richard and David D’C. 9-3 was an emphatic win and could have been more with Eitan missing a tactic in what was otherwise a powerhouse attack and Richard’s passed pawns looking the more deadly.
Team exchange suggested a clear advantage on the top six and so it proved (4W, 2D) but with little between the bottom six. What was most pleasing was the conversion of wins here too with some battling chess.
Staffordshire were gracious in defeat, contributing to our sunny day out, and providing lifts back to the station as well as an excellent selection of cakes and chocie biscuits. Thanks to our travelling parents who enjoyed the sunshine.

Five boards were decided on a piece blunder 4-1 in Middx favour. Those blunders aside, Middx still edged it. Congratulations to Middlesex on a barnstorming performance and season!
