Government funding for chess

The excellent news that the long-held efforts to get chess recognised at UK Government level have finally borne fruit has been announced by the ECF. The August issue of Chess News to ECF members says:

As we go to press we’ve just received the fantastic news that the Department of Culture, Media and Sport has announced a combined package of measures worth almost £1 million that will inspire the next generation of chess players, bring chess to a wider audience, and support the development of elite players. Plans will see investment in the English Chess Federation that will ensure players receive world-leading training and development opportunities and help make England a chess heavyweight, grants for schools in disadvantaged areas to get more primary school children playing chess, and 100 new chess tables installed in public spaces.
