ECF U2050 SF: Essex10-6 Cleveland At Newark. Two years ago, Essex met Cleveland in the ECF U2050 semi-final at Newark. On that day, we were well beaten, 10-6, by an excellent Cleveland performance. Yesterday, we met Cleveland again in the U2050 semi-final at the same venue and gained our revenge! – Skip Michael Spurr.
In the Final, we will meet old foes, Yorkshire.
ECF U1450 SF: Essex 6-6* Surrey* At Wanstead A close match against old foes Surrey was all square after the Surrey “engine room”, boards 5-8, pulled back Essex’ early lead, cancelling out Essex’ 4-0 on the bottom four with the top three level-pegging. Surrey therefore had the board count advantage, so Essex needed to win the last game with Maadesh on Board 4 a pawn up in a R&P ending, but both with a passed pawn. Here, the old Russian proverb “all R&P endings are drawn” held sway and Maadesh and the team had to accept a draw. So congratulations to Surrey on going to the Final, another SCCU pairing, Kent v Surrey.
