Double success v Middx and the M25

SCCU U2050: Middx 7½-8 Essex
At Shepherd’s Bush Essex were missing a number of regulars for various reasons, but when the teams were declared so were Middx and there was nothing between the two teams on paper. Some Essex players were delayed by problems on the M25, but all arrived within default time. Middlesex held the lead for most of the afternoon but were never able to pull away. As is often the case with teams so closely matched, it went down to the last game with scores then level. Here Edgar was a pawn down in a R & P ending, but turned his game around and won to take the match. Mark Murrell’s report is on the U2050 page.

SCCU U1650: Middx 5-11 Essex
At Shepherd’s Bush The M25 problems also affected the U1650 team also playing Middx at the same venue as the U2050 team, but also managed to arrive inside the 1 hour default time. Essex started to chalk up win after win in the 12-board match, compiling seven wins, four draws and only one loss for an excellent start to the campaign. Malcolm Crane’s report is on the U1650 page.
